Death is one of the last great taboos, at least in western European culture. What once was an everyday part of human experience, has now become sanitised, removed from our normal experience.
This makes it all the more important to tell tales which address something we will all have to face. Consequently I often include tales dealing with what we tend to shy away from.
There are many versions of this tale. Charles Kiernan’s always-excellent blog discusses several of them: The Prince Who Would Seek Immortality.
My telling is close to one I found in Italo Calvino’s Italian Folktales.
